What is the most effective way to transform a former industrial site in the heart of the city into 42 social housing units, a day nursery, a communal lounge, a wasserette and outdoor communal spaces?
The project is structured around three large voids: a mini-forest, a large courtyard and a 3D park. These spaces are complemented by four new buildings and two renovated ones, creating a society of complementary spaces.
The success of La Savonnerie is due to a combination of factors, including its architectural quality and the efforts of caretaker Ahmed Bouhnani. Mr Bouhnani has worked closely with residents to develop a collective vegetable garden, beehives, a pond and even a henhouse. The peaceful environment, which is away from the car, provides a welcoming space for spontaneous play by children, fostering a sense of 'Vivre-Ensemble' (living together) that is strengthened year on year.
La Savonnerie has been the recipient of numerous international awards and publications, and represents an exciting alternative to urban sprawl. Over the years, it has become one of Belgium's most convincing examples of contemporary grouped housing.
